Hyde County Natural Wonders

Hyde County is home of Lake Mattamuskeet, the largest natural lake in NC. The wide, shallow lake offers spectacular birding in winter as it welcomes flocks of tundra swans, snow geese, and other migratory waterfowl. Be sure to visit the villages of Engelhard and Swan Quarter, some of NC's earliest settlements or take the ferry over to the island of Ocracoke and enjoy the 16 miles of undeveloped ocean beach and Ocracoke lighthouse built in 1823.

As part of America 250 project, Hyde county designed a comprehensive booklet to highlight the County’s rich history and heritage. It features eleven sites in the County that are in the National Register of Historic Places. The booklet is designed to be used by visitors as well as history aficionados.
